Virtual Hosting

Using slice as a network virtualization paradigm brings a number of advantages in addition to the ease with which network services can be managed. Our virtualization software places each service into its own container, both from a total network perspective and from the standpoint of an individual machine. This has two benefits:

1) the service thinks that it has the sole use of a distributed network and its aggregate resources, and

2) the service is protected from greedy or problematic services deployed on the same box. Likewise, the service in question is also prevented from degrading the performance of another network service.

These isolated containers provide a means of easily plugging in third-party network services to any subset of nodes in your network. This process is straightforward: third party services that can operate in a vanilla Fedora Core Linux environment must be performance tested on a PlanetWorks Linux distribution, a process with which PlanetWorks can help you. Then the service can be deployed on the production platform and managed alongside other third party or in house services in your network.
